Afraid of the gays.

First, some background: between banging his hot wife and banging his campaign manager's hot wife, San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsome noted that any laws banning marriage of two men, or two women, were, strictly speaking, against the California constitution. So the San Francisco courts started enthusiastically marrying people, to the great consternation of certain segments of society. There were injunctions, and the marriages were stopped, pending a court ruling.

The court ruled that he was right a few months back, and so marriages recommenced. A proposition was immediately put on the ballot to ban such things. About eight years ago, a similar measure had been on the ballot, and had passed, but then had ended up being canceled on a technicality. But polling of this new measure seems to imply that it will fail.

Apparently the pro-prop eight folks have started their campaign. On Sunday morning, a nice young couple with a dog and baby stopped by to talk about this as neighbors. I informed them politely that their words were wasted. I am proud of myself for my lack of snarkiness. Not a half hour later a giggling college age (or so it sounded) girl wanting to discuss the same subject. Having gained access to the wit of the staircase, I informed her that I would certainly mull it over while watching my aunt marry her partner of over a decade in a couple of weeks.

Though in retrospect, she only asked if I'd heard of the measure, so I'm not 100% she was pro and not anti.

I'm opposed to gay marriage. by komet (4.00 / 1) #3 Mon Sep 08, 2008 at 11:58:34 AM EST
But I'm also opposed to straight marriage. Am I a homophobe?

If they want to do that, I don't mind.

Also I find those kind of constitutional amendments where it basically says "you people can't do this" a little creepy.  When I think of state and federal constitutions I don't think of sentiment like that.

I'm torn on the measure by MohammedNiyalSayeed (2.00 / 0) #5 Mon Sep 08, 2008 at 12:44:11 PM EST

What I want is to vote against all marriage, based on the simple principle that if I can't have it, neither can anyone else. That not being the proposition, I'm wavering between whether I would cause more pain by voting for it or against it. If I vote for it, I piss off a smaller faction, who then assume that I voted for it because I give a shit what they do with their junk. If I vote against it, I piss off the larger faction, who care what the smaller faction do with their junk. Given that I find both factions equally annoying, I wish there was a "fuck both of you groups" option, but I think that may just be the "don't bother voting" option.

A couple of weeks ago, I was stopped in the Castro by some douchenozzle from the ACLU, who asked if I had a spare moment to talk about my "civil rights". The first time he asked, I told him "Hell no, I don't have time for that. I don't even know who you are." When I passed said douchenozzle again, I gave him a few seconds. I found his perspective on the "NSA wiretaps" particularly amusing. He failed to comprehend the difference in how he and I gathered our information on the NSA, and their listening habits, and how my method might be a little more reliable than his. The entire subject is well above his pay grade, yet, there he was, on the street, running his mouth about something he knew nothing about. I thought that's why Craig Newmark invented blogs?

That weekend, pretty good by MohammedNiyalSayeed (4.00 / 1) #9 Mon Sep 08, 2008 at 03:48:39 PM EST

I saw about 4 of those douchenozzles on various streets with their matching clipboards. I'd venture a guess that every single one of them had zero experience with the TLA in question, as standing around asking strangers for signatures is not something former employees of said TLA would ever waste their time doing.

It always amazes me how people are mistakenly under the belief that their opinions are valid, regardless of their complete lack of knowledge. Well, actually, that isn't true. These days, I expect it.

Beyond the Berkeley hills, it is a hotbed of lesbianism. Seriously. I think every middle-aged lesbian in the Bay Area lives in Walnut Creek.

Hey, have you heard of this? by ammoniacal (2.00 / 0) #8 Mon Sep 08, 2008 at 03:10:11 PM EST
Due to a lack of legislative foresight in Cali, Party A can enter into a domestic partnership with Party B, then marry Party C, thereby circumventing any applicable bigamy statutes!

Pretty cool, huh?
