Funny they didn't mention the obvious of doing your research. I am flying out to Aus on the 26th Sept. An odd day, but it's cheaper because it's midweek, and it's the last day of the off-season (winter) in Aus.
Translation - about £140 cheaper.

Good job you did your research. by ambrosen (2.00 / 0) #10 Wed Sep 13, 2006 at 05:47:35 PM EST
Else you could have been sorely disappointed there. Actually, maybe sore's the wrong word.

February, the 30th.

Seriously, some of the advices are cool but it lacks some more pricey ones (real estate, for instance).

Cheers.

Er... by ucblockhead (2.00 / 0) #6 Wed Sep 13, 2006 at 12:26:51 PM EST
The Guardian thinks Bush won because of his personality!? I mean, yeah, next to the AlGore2000 Bush had something of one, but he was hardly a The Great Communicator. Even they note that Gore actually got more votes, which kinda undercuts their "Election turned on personality" thesis.

There's lots of things you can point to as the "cause" of the loss (and given the razor thin margin, any one of them could be called "critical") but I don't think personality would make the top ten. A bigger issue would be the Democratic inability to articulate a clear vision. That's not a "Gore" problem...it's a problem with the whole party. (And, in fact, probably why Gore himself has gotten so much more traction with his movie...it's the same old wooden personality, but he's presenting a clear thesis directly.)

Re: Wasabi : I've suffered under homegrown languages many, many times, but still, I'd want to actually see the damn thing and how it's used before attacking it.

I dunno, I think personality was critical in 2000 by lm (2.00 / 0) #7 Wed Sep 13, 2006 at 01:57:38 PM EST
As in, if Al Gore circa 2000 would have had a personality, he would have won in a landslide.

Did Bush win because he had a stellar personality? That was The Guadian's thesis, that it was an election on "personality". Instead, I think it was two candidates who were pretty piss-poor in that department. Bush only excelled in that regard in comparison to Gore. It was an election where personality was not an issue as neither candidate really had it.

I've been thinking of this a lot as I listen to a history podcast that opens with historical soundbites including Reagan's "Mr. Gorbachov, tear down this wall"...regardless of your politics, you have to admit that nothing has ever come out of Bush's mouth that's remotely in that league.

Rather, I think that the fact that both parties through up candidates that lacked charisma shows how wrong the thesis is...the only Democratic candidate in the last twenty years with real charisma was Clinton and the only Republican candidate in the last twenty years was Reagan. Probably a better thesis would be "Personality wins elections, but neither party is smart enough to take advantage of it unless by sheer luck a non-drone gets nominated.

(It's interesting to note that both Reagan and Clinton were nominated as "outsiders".)

Honestly, how many presidents in recent history have had real charisma? Clinton, Reagan, Kennedy...perhaps Carter a bit?
