...and the survey says...nicht gut.

So, went for a stag weekend in Dusseldorf. Firstly, I am not actually that big a lover of stag weekends especially as I am still determindly trying to keep my drinking sensible (which it has been for a good while now...). Not a massive fan of the whole laddishness, the insistence on going to dodgy strip bars (if not worse) etc etc etc.

To add to my existing concerns, it turns out Dusseldorf isn't that great. Suprisingly (to me at least), Dusseldorf has far more of a generic city feel than Berlin (which being the capital, I presumed would have more tourists and therefore be more open to cultural dilution). In fact, walking around in Dusseldorf (the centre/old town atleast) really has that could be any city feel to it. There are more Irish bars there than German. Literally every other bar is Irish. I saw very few authentic German bars. There are loads of karaoke bars too.

There were some nice parts but only saw these in odd blips when I escaped from the main group and went for a couple of wanders (so perhaps the paragraph above says more about the guys planning the weekend than Dusseldorf). Some nice modern architecture around the dock areas and some nice buildings/bars/restaurants down side alleys in the old town.

Also, all the guys (and perfectly within their rights) wanted to start drinking at 12pm and keep going until 4am. There was absolutely no way I was going to go along with this having been good with my drinking recently so something had to give (either staying out late or starting early). I decided on a semi-compromise and met the guys mid afternoon, drank reasonably steadily and then went home at a reasonable-ish time. This earned me some ribbings but was less of a hard time than I would have given myself for letting the drink get out of hand so was worth it.

Got back on Sunday afternoon, had a quick kip at home and then went and met up with best friend (who was back from working in France) and about 10 other friends for dinner. Was a really cool night and excellent to see him - even if he did warble on about WoW for far too long.

Monday was spent with C at my Dad's (which involved him cooking me a steak stuffed with Dijon and Brie - yum is not the word) then a nice lazy evening vegged out in front of the telly. Tuesday (which I also booked off) was a Xbox/DVD/Pizza veg out with pal from France and yesterday (again not in work) was a day of Spring cleaning in the flat, followed by being cooked a lovely dinner at C's.

Today will be spent at work (boo), then driving range after work, quick pint on the way home in the glorious sunshine then finishing my spring cleaning.

Life can be sweet when it wants to be, even when there's nothing really momentous going on.

No tales of: England expects, etc.

So, when does C move back in then?

He did go down the docks though by Rogerborg (4.00 / 2) #2 Thu May 04, 2006 at 07:41:06 AM EST
I'm not touching that, but I'm sure someone will take up the challenge.

  1. Oh yes there was, just not involving me.
  2. Already have a few.
  3. The stage was fully dressed at 1030am on the Friday in his outfit for the day/evening - a ladys bra and pants. Will try and upload a picture as its...disturbing. He also caught a cold (and possibly something else, see point 1).

I meant stag not stage.

Also, re C, not rushing into anything, I reckon we will give it till at least Xmas before discussing that - however, it is gonna happen and it will be for keeps.

Not keen on stag nights myself by nebbish (4.00 / 2) #3 Thu May 04, 2006 at 07:45:16 AM EST
Enforced fun never ends up being that much fun. Last one I went on was a laid-back, no-pressure pub crawl in Liverpool which ended up being great.

Well done for not bingeing, didn't think you'd manage it to be honest. That'll show me for doubting you.

My favourite was my brothers which ended up including the management and staff of a local Italian restaurant (as in Blues Point Rd, North Sydney) in a loooong night of bullshit, grappa and something that tasted of lemons that appeared from the darkest recesses of the freezer.
I woke up in the armchair of some strangers flat with no memories of how I got there, or who these people were...

My most enjoyable stag... by Alice Pulley (4.00 / 1) #9 Thu May 04, 2006 at 08:14:00 AM EST
...was a day spent doing a couple of activitys (clay pigeon shooting then go-karting) followed by a night in Turkish restaurant in London which involved having a good few drinks but not loads (plus tempered with food) and a bit of good clean fun (belly dancers on the table as opposed to the standard ropey strippers/worse). It was just more enjoyable than a weekend getting bollocksed you can't remember.

Activities are the way to go. by ambrosen (2.00 / 0) #14 Thu May 04, 2006 at 09:50:21 AM EST
Although on the one I was on, we were just sitting calmly on the bus on the way home, and one of our group got a completely unprovoked punch in the face by someone leaving the bus. Other members of the group performed swift retribution when the bus driver stopped and opened the door to let them negotiate with the assaulter.

Is probably some variation on "Limoncello" an awesome drink if ever there was one.

...but have even more incentive than ever now. That sounds much more like my sort of thing, the weekend long endurance test which Stags seem to have become is too much like hard work.

Düsseldorf: by komet (4.00 / 6) #4 Thu May 04, 2006 at 07:51:48 AM EST
I did warn you, didn't I.

I have a theory that says the world's most interesting cities are those which would need more investment in infrastructure than the government can possibly afford. It's why East Berlin is more intesting than West Berlin (though that's quite nice as well), and it explains why London, New York, Paris, Tokyo, Bangkok etc. are so excellent. In places like Düsseldorf or Milton Keynes, the local authorities go, "ah well, we've go £3 billion to blow, let's make this place as boring as possible".

Well put... by Alice Pulley (4.00 / 1) #10 Thu May 04, 2006 at 08:17:34 AM EST
...it's all just so clinical in some of these places eg everythings in the same place. That sense of being able to jump on a underground/bus/tram and jump off somewhere random and find a bar or restaurant is missing in those type of places and is one of the things I love about London.

...I make a few comments about not drinking to excess and your immediate reaction is an accusation of cannibalism.

Those computer games you make are warping you, man.

(Am not really being that sensible, just seems that way due to the end of the spectrum that I have operated in).

Funny that, by Metatone (4.00 / 1) #20 Thu May 04, 2006 at 11:37:19 AM EST
I always found Duesseldorf to be ok, as cities go.

Mind you, you have to stay away from that big bar area where all the Irish pubs are...

ah, I begin to see the problem...
